Top 10 Things to Do in Soufrière, Saint Lucia
From the iconic Pitons to hidden waterfalls and volcanic mud baths, here is your insider guide to the very best experiences Soufrière has to offer.
Top 10 Things to Do in Soufrière, Saint Lucia
Soufrière is the oldest town in Saint Lucia and, without question, the most spectacular. Nestled between the twin Piton peaks and the Caribbean Sea, it packs more natural wonders into a small area than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean. Whether you have one day or a full week, here is what you absolutely cannot miss.
1. Hike the Pitons
The Pitons — Gros Piton and Petit Piton — are Saint Lucia's most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gros Piton is the more accessible of the two, with a guided hike that takes around 3–4 hours return. The views from the summit are breathtaking: the Caribbean Sea stretching to the horizon, the town of Soufrière far below, and the lush rainforest canopy all around you.
Tip: Hire a local guide — it is required for Gros Piton and they bring the trail to life with stories and knowledge of the local flora and fauna.
2. Soak in the Sulphur Springs
Just a short drive from town, the Sulphur Springs are the world's only drive-in volcano. You can walk right up to the bubbling, steaming vents and learn about the volcanic activity that shaped this island. Afterwards, slather yourself in the warm volcanic mud — it is said to be excellent for your skin — and rinse off in the nearby mineral pools.
Tip: The mud dries quickly, so have someone help you cover your back for the full spa experience.
3. Swim at Sugar Beach
Tucked between the two Pitons, Sugar Beach (also known as Jalousie Beach) is one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean. The dark volcanic sand, crystal-clear water, and dramatic mountain backdrop make it utterly unique. It is a short boat ride or drive from Soufrière town.
4. Explore the Diamond Botanical Gardens
The Diamond Botanical Gardens are a lush, beautifully maintained tropical garden featuring exotic flowers, towering trees, and the famous Diamond Waterfall — one of the most colourful waterfalls in the Caribbean, tinted by mineral deposits in shades of yellow, orange, and green.
The on-site mineral baths were originally built for the troops of King Louis XVI of France in 1784. Today you can bathe in the same mineral-rich waters for a very reasonable fee.
5. Snorkel or Dive at Anse Chastanet
The marine reserve at Anse Chastanet is world-renowned. The coral reef begins just metres from the shore, making it ideal for snorkellers as well as divers. You will encounter sea turtles, parrotfish, angelfish, and if you are lucky, the occasional seahorse.
Tip: Book a guided snorkel tour with us for the best spots and equipment included.
6. Take a Boat Tour Along the Coast
Seeing Soufrière from the water gives you a completely different perspective. A boat tour along the coast lets you admire the Pitons from the sea, stop for snorkelling, and often includes a visit to a secluded beach accessible only by boat. Sunset cruises are particularly magical.
7. Visit the Morne Coubaril Estate
This working plantation gives you a fascinating window into Saint Lucia's agricultural heritage. You can tour the cocoa, coconut, and cassava processing facilities, watch traditional craft demonstrations, and sample local produce. The estate also offers zip-lining and ATV tours through the surrounding jungle.
8. Waterfall Hike to Toraille
The Toraille Waterfall is a 15-metre cascade that falls into a natural pool — perfect for a refreshing swim after the hike in. The surrounding gardens are beautifully kept and the whole experience takes only a couple of hours, making it ideal for families or those short on time.
9. Explore Soufrière Town
The town itself is worth exploring on foot. The colourful Creole architecture, the bustling market, the old Catholic church, and the friendly locals all give you an authentic feel for island life. Stop at a local restaurant for a plate of green fig and saltfish — the national dish — washed down with a cold Piton beer.
10. Watch the Sunset from the Piton View
There are several spots around Soufrière where you can watch the sun sink behind the Pitons. The view from the Ladera Resort lookout is particularly spectacular, but you can also find excellent vantage points from the hills above town. It is the perfect way to end a day in one of the Caribbean's most beautiful destinations.
